PREGNANCY & BACK PAIN - CAN CHIROPRACTIC CARE HELP?

In the Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health researchers studied the effects of chiropractic care on 17 women with low back pain lasting an average of 21.7 days. The intensity of the back pain was 5.9 on a 1-10 scale.For 28% of the women, pregnancy was the first time they ever have experienced intense back problems and 75% said they had not suffered from lower back pain prior to pregnancy. The authors reported that the average time to reach significant pain relief was 4.5 days.
There were no adverse reactions reported by any of the patients.

A study published in the journal  Chiropractic and Manual Therapies found that 85% of pregnant patients had significant improvements in pain within three months of receiving chiropractic treatments for back and pelvic problems. In another study the results showed that chiropractic care was more effective than standard medical care for alleviating pregnancy-related back pain. No serious adverse effects of treatment were noted in both studies.

Assessing spinal alignment and movement is what a chiropractor will check and with gentle low force techniques will help to correct areas in a pregnant woman’s neck, mid back, low back and pelvis. Chiropractors will also give posture advice whether it be standing, sitting or sleeping, it is important to minimise this stress.

A healthy spine in pregnancy is not only more comfortable for the mother to be, but also for the unborn baby. A well aligned pelvis cradles the baby for more balanced growth, and also helps to reduce labour time by 24% for first time mums (study by Dr. Joan Fallon).

If a natural, drug free approach to pregnancy and birth is important for you, then consider the many health benefits associated with chiropractic care for you and your baby.
