COULD YOUR CHILD HAVE A SCOLIOSIS?

FREE Scoliosis Checks For Children

During the month of September we are holding a community event. My aim is to check as many children as possible for scoliosis. There is much confusion and misinformation about scoliosis still, and many parents may be getting the wrong information about their child's scoliosis. Any scoliosis, no matter how small, must be treated and the 'Let's wait and see' is not the best advice. A small scoliosis turns into a LARGE scoliosis if left untreated- the 'what and see' approach is criminal.
Some parents are sent home with a scoliosis diagnosis for their child and told to get their child exercising, doing some swimming for example. Swimming, in fact no exercise alone will FIX a scoliosis. Again, this is bad advice - in the meantime the child's scoliosis is getting worse.

So what is a scoliosis?
A scoliosis is an abnormal curve of the spine when looking at the spine front to back. The spine should be straight.

What are some tell tale signs for parents to check for possible scoliosis?
Check for uneven shoulder heights, uneven hip levels, flaring of one shoulder blade or a protrusion of one side of the ribcage.

What age should we be looking out for scoliosis?
The most common type of scoliosis is Idiopathic Scoliosis, in other words the cause of the scoliosis is unknown. The problem is more frequent in girls rather than boys and is known to progress rapidly around periods of growth. For girls it's around 11 to 12 and for boys around 13-14 years of age. Juvenile Scoliosis is seen in younger children and Infantile Scoliosis is seen in babies. SO ALL BABIES AND CHILDREN SHOULD BE CHECKED FOR SCOLIOSIS.

Do all scolioses require surgery?
No, however, if the angle of the curve gets great enough then an operation may be best option. HOWEVER, if we can pick up the scoliosis early enough, then the problem can be treated or at least maintained to prevent its progression.
