Could Your Back Pain/Discomfort be Coming From an Undetected Scoliosis?

A study in the American Journal of Clinical Chiropractic, January 20th 2013, shows the reduction of a scoliotic curve in a 13 year old girl’s primary spinal curve from 41 degrees to 28 degrees, an improvement of 13 degrees. She had been receiving chiropractic care for years, but the relief was only temporary. Her pain had been increasing over a 4 month period and at the end of 5 weeks and 13 sessions of CBP work, her pain had reduced by 90%.

The paper was written by Deed E. Harrison, DC and Adrian Dennewald, DC, both Chiropractic BioPhysics chiropractors. The treatment that achieved these outstanding results combined traction, exercises, and spinal adjusting.
Treatment had included the following:

1.Traction - CBP Mirror Image for Scoiiosis
As seen on the photo above the girl is lying on a dennerrol traction table, where through careful and specific xray analysis is used to apply pressure and traction to encourage the spine to move towards better alignment. The patient had 3-5 sessions per week and the time on the traction table slowly increased from 2-3 minutes to 20-30 minutes.

2. Mirror Image Exercises and Adjustments
The patient during her visits underwent mirror image adjusting, where she was placed in a position to stretch the scoliosis and then apply neurological stimulation. Exercises to again stretch the scoliosis were given as home work.

Follow up xrays had not only showed an improvement in her primary curve by 13 degrees, but her secondary curve had improved also.

Did you know research shows that 40% of adults with low back pain have a scoliosis.

SO WHERE DOES IT START?
Most scoliosis will start in childhood and over 80% are idiopathic, in other words not a clear underlying cause, however, research is now showing that there could be a genetic involvement.
WHAT IS A SCOLIOSIS?
A scoliosis is a side curve in the spine that is normally straight looking at the spine from behind. A curve of 10 degrees (Cobb angle) with a rotation in the vertebrae is a true definition of a scoliosis. HOWEVER, the earlier the scoliosis is detected in children the greater the chance of preventing the curve worsening and perhaps ending up needing surgery.

HOW CAN YOU CHECK YOUR CHILD TO SEE IF THEY HAVE A SCOLIOSIS?

1.Check them from behind with minimal or tight clothing. Do they have an:
uneven shoulder level?
uneven hip level?
shift of torso to the left or right?
2. Check if the have;
prominent shoulder blade on one side
visible ‘S’ curve in their spine
3.Check to see if they have a ‘hump’ on one side of their ribcage on bending forward.

If your child has any of these findings it is important to have a chiropractor check their spine for a scoliosis.

WHAT DO WE DO IF WE FIND A SCOLIOSIS IN YOUR CHILD?

If we diagnose a child with a scoliosis we will treat your child in house with Chiropractic BioPhysics, including traction, Scoliroll and home corrective exercises. If our doctors of chiropractic cannot help your child we will refer to the Scolicare centre for further analysis.

Call our office on 9329 1118 to make an appointment for your child OR if you know someone, young or old, who may be suffering with a scoliosis, then let them know of our FREE initial check up offer.
